Where People Go Wrong with Beds

A bed is something we use every single day, yet it’s often one of the quickest decisions people make when furnishing a home. With it being Sleep Awareness Month, there’s a lot of focus on routines and winding down in the evening – but far less on what we’re actually sleeping on. I see it often with clients. A bed is chosen because it feels comfortable for five minutes in a showroom, rather than thinking about how it will support you every night, and how it will sit within the room as a whole.

Choosing Well

A bed isn’t just about comfort in the moment. It affects how you sleep, how you feel when you wake, and even how settled a bedroom feels. When it’s right, everything else tends to fall into place more easily. When it’s not, the space can feel slightly unresolved.

The Bed “MOT”

I often describe a bed as something that needs reviewing over time — a bit like an MOT. It doesn’t suddenly stop working, but it does change. Support softens, materials settle, and you might just find you’re not sleeping as well as you used to. What’s often overlooked is that it’s not just the mattress doing the work. The base matters just as much. A good sprung base supports the mattress properly, helps everything last longer, and ultimately makes a real difference to how your back is supported night after night.

Quality Matters

This is why I care so much about choosing well in the first place. I had a Hypnos bed for years that genuinely stood the test of time, so when it came to replacing it, I didn’t overthink it – I chose another from their range. There’s a consistency in how they’re made that you really notice over time. Everything is built with proper support in mind, using natural materials and traditional craftsmanship, which gives a very different feel to something more mass-produced.

Making It Easier to Choose

As part of Sleep Awareness Month, Land of Beds are also sharing guidance on what to look for when choosing a bed properly, which ties in closely with how I approach things. They offer a wide range of well-made beds and mattresses, not just from Hypnos but from a number of established makers, which makes it easier to compare quality and find something that genuinely suits how you live and sleep.

The Craftsmanship

For me, brands like Hypnos stand out because of how much care goes into the making. Their beds are designed to properly support the body and improve sleep over time, using premium natural materials and traditional handcrafting methods here in Britain. They also hold a Royal Warrant (something they’ve had since 1929), which reflects a long-standing commitment to quality and longevity. It’s that level of craftsmanship that means a bed isn’t just something that lasts a few years, but something that continues to perform properly for much longer.

Design Alignment

A well designed bedroom is never about just one element, but the bed is always where it starts. When you choose something that’s well made, properly considered, and suited to how you live, the rest of the room comes together far more naturally. And more often than not, it’s the difference between something that feels fine for now, and something that continues to feel right over time. Fabian Interiors specialises in creating calm, cohesive bedroom spaces rooted in quality, craftsmanship and considered design.

A Detailed Guide

If you’re interested in looking at this from a slightly different perspective, I’ve also written more about the psychology behind the materials we choose in the home, and how they influence how a space feels. You can read more in Materials Matter .

And if you’d like a more detailed guide on what quality looks like when choosing a bed, including how different ranges are designed to support sleep more effectively, Land of Beds have put together a really helpful companion piece on their website, which works alongside this as a practical guide.
